Evolving the Google design and experience

Evolving the Google design and experience: "Starting today, you might begin noticing that things look a little different across Google products. We’re working on a project to bring you a new and improved Google experience, and over the next few months, you’ll continue to see more updates to our look and feel. Even our classic homepage is getting a bit of a makeover:

New Google homepage with a smaller logo and links moved to the top and bottom edges of the browser for a cleaner look

The way people use and experience the web is evolving, and our goal is to give you a more seamless and consistent online experience—one that works no matter which Google product you’re using or what device you’re using it on. The new Google experience that we’ve begun working toward is founded on three key design principles: focus, elasticity and effortlessness.

  • Focus: Whether you’re searching, emailing or looking for a map, the only thing you should be concerned about is getting what you want. Our job is to provide the tools and features that will get you there quickly and easily. With the design changes in the coming weeks and months, we’re bringing forward the stuff that matters to you and getting all the other clutter out of your way. Even simple changes, like using bolder colors for actionable buttons or hiding navigation buttons until they’re actually needed, can help you better focus on only what you need at the moment.

  • Elasticity: In the early days, there was pretty much just one way to use Google: on a desktop computer with an average-sized monitor. Over a decade later, all it takes is a look around one’s home or office at the various mobile devices, tablets, high-resolution monitors and TVs to see a plethora of ways to access the web. The new design will soon allow you to seamlessly transition from one device to another and have a consistent visual experience. We aim to bring you this flexibility without sacrificing style or usefulness.

  • Effortlessness: Our design philosophy is to combine power with simplicity. We want to keep our look simple and clean, but behind the seemingly simple design, use new technologies like HTML5, WebGL and the latest, fastest browsers to make sure you have all the power of the web behind you.

Constant revision and improvement is part of our overarching philosophy. For example, last year we introduced an updated look and feel to our search results, and if you compare the original Google homepage to today’s version, you’ll see that a makeover every so often can certainly be refreshing:

Original Google homepage in 1997

Starting today and over the course of the next few months, look for a series of design improvements across all our products, including Google Search, Google Maps and Gmail.

Google Search Finds Citrix Receiver for Chrome Notebooks

Google Search Finds Citrix Receiver for Chrome Notebooks: "

Citrix has just announced Citrix Receiver for Chrome Notebooks. The new Google OS and reference design for notebooks is designed to run apps entirely from the web. That's relatively easy for web and SaaS apps, but for the thousands of corporate Windows apps Google needed another answer in order to make the new platform useful as a business tool or even a consumer device with casual access to work apps. The answer came from talking to CIO's and IT Pros at companies who would need to endorse the device, " add Citrix Receiver ' was an obvious solution. ( You can also find the answer by Google searching run windows apps from any device or any variation of that  )

Google's announcement today included a keynote demonstration of Citrix Receiver accessing a number of Microsoft applications hosted on XenApp. This Receiver for Chrome Notebooks is also unique in that it's based on HTML5 and requires no download and install like most Receivers. It's very cool, just click the icon, log-on and everything required comes down from the web. The new Web Receiver interface is presented including the ability to search, subscribe and select favorite apps. The apps launch as expected and the performance is great. What's different is the apps run maximized inside the Browser vs conventional windowing, and task switching is accomplished through the browser tabs. Check out the demo at http://www.youtube.com/user/googlechrome

Some screen shots of Citrix Receiver for Chrome Notebooks:

The Citrix Receiver will also be included in Google's Chrome Web Store when its available in 1H2011. Users will only need a company provided link to get to a log-on page making app delivery simple for IT.

Google's entry into the OS market is interesting and fits well with their vision to host everything on the web. Users get device independence, and IT meets the objective to minimize support for distributed end point devices. With Google Chrome for Notebooks, Google will provide automated updates to the OS as required, and security exposures are minimized because nothing can be installed locally. Add Citrix Receiver and IT should be happy. I think user adoption will depend on the devices that hardware vendors come up with. These new Notebook devices will compete with Tablets in the limited task mobility segment and full function Windows 7 Netbooks & Laptops on the other side, time will tell...

What's your opinion ?

19 Beautiful Examples of HDR Done Right

19 Beautiful Examples of HDR Done Right: "

As some of you may know, HDR photography is a big part of what I do. I’ve spent countless hours learning, practicing and honing my processing techniques and I’d like to think that by now I have an eye for a good HDR image. One thing that gets on my nerves is when I see a post on some blog titled “50 Examples of Incredible HDR Photography.” It’s not the title that bugs me, but the content. So many of these list posts are full of poor examples of HDR photography. Maybe not to the untrained eye, but certainly to an avid HDR enthusiast. Some of the images are great, don’t get me wrong, but others are full of over saturation, blatant halo’s, blown channels, and just bad imagery. It seems that the extent of these authors involvement in the world of HDR is the time it took to scour the web to create a post for it.

I thought I would do something a little different. I spend pretty much every day of my life in the HDR community. Whether I’m updating my daily blog, chatting with other HDR photographers on Twitter and email, viewing the work of these great photographers on their blogs, or even writing articles on HDR for this site. I am pretty picky about the images I will share with others. If it doesn’t blow me away, I don’t spend much time looking at it.

What’s different about this list of HDR images is that an HDR photographer (your truly) is putting the list together. I’m not saying that my opinion is superior to the next guy, but I think that when it comes to spotting a great HDR image I’m up for the challenge.

Below are a few examples of absolute spot on HDR images from around the world, and all from different photographers. These images (at least in my opinion) represent a handful of the best work the HDR community has to offer. You won’t find any halo’s, ghosting, blown channels, or muddy whites in these images! Every image was carefully hand picked for excellence in processing and composition.

Note: I’ve provided links to all these photographers sites. Be sure to click the images to see some more incredible work from these guys. These images are just the beginning!

For more information on HDR Photography, just type “HDR” into the search box at the top of the DPS site.

Deconstruction: James Modern Terrariums

Deconstruction: James Modern Terrariums: "

James Modern Terrariums is Jeff Schneider, an art director in fashion for over 10 years who left his job to focus on modern industrial design and home decor. Growing up with two parents who were passionate gardeners, Jeff began collecting plants at a young age — the more obscure the better. Recognizing a gap in the market for modern, minimal terrariums, he decided to create terrariums for people who shared his same aesthetic.

Deconstruction: James Modern Terrariums

Self-contained ecosystems have always been fascinating to me. As a child, I loved the challenge of keeping creatures happy and healthy in environments that mimicked their native habitat.

In the 90’s, I read an article in a home magazine about terrariums using mason jars, fish tanks, etc. Lacking any land or garden in New York City, I decided to create my interpretation of the terrarium, using modern vessels and minimal plantings. I eventually designed a custom minimalist rimless glass cube and have created countless terrariums since.

A few years ago, I left my job in fashion and decided to focus on industrial design and home decor. I have been creating and modifying my own furniture and home accessories since I was very young. Between prototypes of lighting, vases, and decor, I decided to create a few terrariums. I recognized a gap in the market. All of the terrariums I had seen (at that point) were very cutesy and homemade. There were very few modern terrariums being sold. I put a few of my terrariums on the internet to get feedback and the reaction was excellent.

At this point, I was only creating glass cubes and using ready-made vases/vessels. Unable to find modern, organic, biomorphic vessels for my plantings, I decided to render my own shapes and work with a glass blower to create them. Now, I can work with clients to design one-of-a-kind terrariums for their space.

Deconstruction: James Modern Terrariums

Inspiration and design
When creating terrarium shapes, I look to nature, art and design for inspiration. Gourds, pebbles, mushrooms, fungi, beans, amoeba, even the human heart have been sources of inspiration. In addition, I find a great deal of inspiration in modern and mid-century modern design as well as everyday objects. I love anything with beautiful curves that mimic life.

I either work with a client to create a shape for their space or they can choose from shapes I have available.

Glass blowing
Throughout the glass blowing process, I work with the artists to make certain my terrariums are evolving as I envisioned.

Deconstruction: James Modern Terrariums

Activated charcoal
On the bottom of the terrarium, I place a one-half inch layer of activated horticultural charcoal. The charcoal will absorb harmful organic materials; keep the soil fresh; and prevent fungus and mold from growing. Since the environment is self-contained (unlike a potted plant, where the roots and soil would receive fresh air flow), the terrarium needs the charcoal to absorb organic chemical build-up and fight bacteria.

Deconstruction: James Modern Terrariums

Soil
I create my terrarium soil from scratch. One should choose a soil suited to the plants inside. If you’re creating a succulent terrarium, buy a succulent and cacti terrarium mix. Otherwise, use a regular potting mix. I mix a half-cup of activated charcoal into the soil mix. The charcoal will keep the soil fresh. In addition, being porous, the charcoal adds some needed lightness and drainage to the soil. I add layers of sand or other materials to add visual interest to the bottom of the terrarium, making certain these materials are inert and will not leach any harmful chemicals into the soil.

Deconstruction: James Modern Terrariums

Plants
I tend to plant true miniature plants. They are rare, but worth the end result I’m seeking… plants that are in proportion with the terrarium.

In an enclosed environment, where every detail is visible from all angles, it’s important to trim any unsightly or damaged leaves (see the image above of a Miniature African Violet).

The terrarium allows me to use plants that thrive in the humid conditions of a terrarium. For example, ivy and certain ferns quickly wilt and become susceptible to disease and insects in the dry conditions of the home, but will thrive in terrariums.

It’s also necessary to know which plants will survive and complement one another in the same terrarium. Plants must have similar humidity, water, and light requirements. In addition, it’s important to make certain that the plants complement each other aesthetically. Color, shape, and textures are all important considerations when grouping plants in a terrarium.

Deconstruction: James Modern Terrariums

I make certain the roots of plants are loose so they can easily establish themselves in the terrarium soil. Some plants may be root bound (see above). I gently separate the roots with a fork.

Deconstruction: James Modern Terrariums

Deconstruction: James Modern Terrariums

I then create a well in the soil and make certain to place the plant at the same level it was in the pot.

Deconstruction: James Modern Terrariums

Deconstruction: James Modern Terrariums

I fill in the well with the surrounding soil and gently tamp down around the plant to remove any air pockets. After all the plants in the terrarium are in place, I water them each to ensure that air pockets are removed from the roots. Watering also helps the plants establish themselves and take root in the terrarium.

Depending on the opening and the depth of the terrarium, it’s necessary to use tools I have created to plant items. The miniature species of moss above has to be planted with tweezers one piece at a time.

Deconstruction: James Modern Terrariums

Deconstruction: James Modern Terrariums

Mosses need specific soil requirements. An acidic substrate must be put down over the existing soil before planting.

Deconstruction: James Modern Terrariums

Decor
I use decorative stones from around the world to add complementary texture to my plantings. If a client wants a natural look, I collect and dry items such as acorns, lichen covered twigs, etc. I treat these items to kill any insect larvae and disease. Care must be taken to place any these stones, rocks and decor around delicate stems without crushing them.

Deconstruction: James Modern Terrariums

Final touches
A soft brush is useful for removing soil and dust that has accumulated on leaves during planting

Delivery to the client
Part of the fun of creating a terrarium is watching it grow and fill out. When I hand a terrarium over to a client, I want it to look perfect. Therefore, I hold onto it for a few months; remove anything that isn’t doing well; and learn the light and watering needs of the terrarium. Once handed over to the client, all they need to know is where to place it in their home and how much and how often to water it. Aside from that, the plants inside will continue to thrive and grow.
